A few days back I was in Seattle, and I went to visit the Elliott Bay Book Company. This landmark store will be moving from its Pioneer Square location in the spring, and I was there to say good-bye … to the historic setting and to my twenties—I spent most of them working at the store. While I was at the information counter visiting with my friend Holly, I heard someone ask, “Do you have To Asia With Love by Kim Fay.” I looked up, and there stood an older man asking the clerk for my book. My first thought: someone put him up to it. But no, turns out it was a wonderful coincidence. “I’m Kim Fay,” I said, surprising him as much as he surprised me. He told me he had seen the book before, had met one of the contributors in Thailand, and was planning a trip to Laos. Then he bought the book and made my day—not only for buying it, but for buying it in the very place where I used to work and dream about the day when I would have books on sale there.
